When it all started
In the summer of 2018 we were asked to complete some commercial wiring. We were to supply and fit some long runs of armoured cable. The cable was for sockets along the dock side.
The customer wants sockets spaced along the dock for general use.
What we did
Before starting we had to measure the length of the dock. Once we had all the cable lengths we were able to calculate the cables sizes. I new the cable would have to be larger than average to allow for the volt drop.
Now the cable size was determined, it was ordered. The customers ground workers had dug the trench and we started. Its not very often we get customers that require commercial wiring like this!
The cables where installed and then we had to wait until the dock side was ready.
10 months later!
We called back towards the end of the week.
We fitted the waterproof sockets and some junction boxes that are required to joint some of the armoured cables. All of the armoured cables are fitted with water proof glands. This will stop the ingress of any moisture to the accesories. Each socket has a RCD fitted for safety. RCD’s are a safety trip that will protect anything that is plugged in. Under these conditions it is the only way to do it.
There are different electrical requirements that apply to docks and marinas. Also fitted at the main fuse board there is a earth rod. All of the armoured cables are protected by 100mA RCD.
Testing and Certification
Before turning on the power to the sockets, we carried out some tests first. You need to complete a few tests to confirm the circuit is safe to use.
- Insulation Resistance test
- Earth continuity / R1+R2
- Earth Loop Impedance
- RCD test
Once these tests are completed were able to leave the customer to use them!
