Does my house need rewiring?

We are going to try to help you answer the question of “Does my house need rewiring”.

1. House old is your house?

If your house is within 30 years old and the wiring has never been updated there is a possibility that it will require some electrical work to improve it.  There has been some electrical changes in the regulations over the last 5 years that may require your wiring to be impoved.  “Dont panic” these changes may not affect the safety of the installation.

If your house is older than 30 years it may be due for an upgrade.  It could possibly need a partial rewire or maybe a full rewire.  A free 15 minute check can be provided by us to determine the condition of the wiring to help decide if a rewire is necessary.

A house with electrical wiring of around 40 years old will almost certainly need to be rewired.  This is due to the fact that the cable used in the past has deteriated.  And the methods used 40 years ago are a little unconventional compared to todays.

2. What does your fuse board look like?

Are you asking yourself “Does my house need rewiring?” If so it may only be the fuse board that needs to be upgraded.  There has been many different types of fuse board over the recent years.  A fuse board that was originally fitted when your house had electric for the 1st time could look like this.

old fuseboard

If your fuseboard is like the one pictured above, you will more than likely need a full rewire and a new fuse board.  This type of fuse board was fitted around the 1950’s/1960’s.

This fuseboard is from a time around the 1970’s to 1980’s.  If your fuse board is like this you will need a minimum of a new fuseboard and may be a partial rewire, if not a complete rewire.

The picture here is of a fuseboard that has an rcd fitted to protect some of the circuits.  This is a typical example of a fuseboard fitted in the 1980’s.  If yours looks like this you may only require an upgrade.  Providing the wiring is in good condition.

Here is an example of a fuseboard that would be fitted currently.  Its upto date and has two RCD’s.  This version is made of metal.  You may have a similar one that is made of plastic.  The metal type superseeded the plastic one in the last year.  Dont worry if you have the plastic one, its still safe to use!
